In April 2026 Tesco shipped its first own-label range with GS1-powered QR codes — batch and use-by date carried in the code, so the till can block out-of-date stock and a recall names a batch instead of a whole product line. Woolworths, further down the same road in Australia, reports food waste down as much as 40% on date-embedded ranges. When a retailer does this to an own-label range, its suppliers receive a spec, not a suggestion — which code, what data inside it, where on the pack, by when. That email is the deadline that matters; Sunrise 2027 is just its calendar.

Why not just print a normal QR?
A normal QR holds a fixed web address: no GTIN for the till, no batch for the recall, and no way to change it after printing. A GS1 Digital Link carries the product identity itself — which is what your retailer's spec will actually ask for — and stays re-pointable for the life of the pack.
